Why go
Sandstone pillars, glass bridges and the film-set mountains that made Avatar look restrained.
- Hiking
- Photography
- Big scenery
What is worth your time
Yuanjiajie
The pillar forest. Go at opening; by 10am the viewpoints are shoulder to shoulder.
Tianmen Mountain
Cable car from the city, cliff walkways and the 999-step stair. Half a day, weather permitting.
Golden Whip Stream
A flat valley walk under the pillars — the best low-effort payoff in the park.
Airport and station transfers
Most travellers arrive by high-speed train at Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站), which is closest to the Wulingyuan core area. The airport (DYG) is small and closer to the city.
| Method | Time | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-speed rail to West Station | From Changsha ~2.5 h | ¥120–180 | Best option. Buses to Wulingyuan leave from outside the station. |
| Bus, West Station → Wulingyuan | 40–50 min | ¥12–20 | Frequent in daytime; last buses run early evening. |
| DiDi / taxi to Wulingyuan | 40 min | ¥80–120 | Agree the meter or use the app; drivers at the station will quote fixed prices. |
| Airport (DYG) | 15 min to city | ¥30–50 | Few flights; most routes connect via Changsha. |
Getting around
- Park shuttle buses — Included in the park ticket; they link the gates, cable cars and trailheads. Routes are signposted in English but sparse.
- Cable cars and elevators — Charged separately. Bailong Elevator and the main cableways sell out on holidays — buy with your ticket.
- DiDi — Works in the city and at the gates, but coverage inside the scenic area is nil. Plan around the buses.
- Walking — This is the point. Distances between viewpoints are bigger than the map suggests — add 30%.
Where to stay
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Wulingyuan (east gate) | Park access | Closest to the core scenery and the forest park gate. Best for 2+ park days. |
| Zhangjiajie city | Arrival night | Near the train station and Tianmen cable car; not convenient for the national park. |
| Yangjiajie / west side | Quiet, views | Fewer tourists, fewer services. Good if you hike and do not need nightlife. |
What to eat
| Dish | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Hunan smoked pork | Local restaurants in Wulingyuan town |
| Tujia sour soup fish | Family restaurants near the east gate |
| Chilli-heavy stir-fries | Anywhere — ask for 微辣 (mild) and still expect heat |
| Street noodles | Morning stalls in the city |
What it costs
| Style | Per day | What that buys |
|---|---|---|
| Backpacker | ¥300–450 | Guesthouse, park shuttle, noodle meals, one cable car |
| Comfortable | ¥600–1,000 | Good hotel by the east gate, all cable cars, sit-down dinners |
| Premium | ¥1,500+ | Private guide and driver, best hotel, flexible schedule |
Same three tiers for every city, plus what individual meals, metro rides and tickets cost: what a trip to China costs.
